GED North Carolina: Learn How to Pass the North Carolina GED Exam

Prepare for your future by earning a General Education Development (GED) credential. An increasing number of employers require candidates to have a high school diploma or GED. This article reviews North Carolina's requirements for earning a GED certificate.

The GED (General Educational Development) test is a battery of five tests that ask questions about subjects usually covered in high school. Most colleges and employers will accept GED certificates as equivalent to high school diplomas. Each year, thousands of North Carolina residents earn their GED.

North Carolina GED Requirements:

Eligibility

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older (age requirements may vary, check with your local testing center for more details)
  • Must be a resident of North Carolina
  • Must have withdrawn from high school for six months
  • Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:

  • Language Arts - Writing (includes 45 minute essay question)
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Mathematics (a calculator may be used on Part 1 only, not on Part 2)
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Individuals may retake all or part of the exam until they have achieved passing scores is.

Registration and Fees

Registration may be completed at any one of North Carolina's testing facilities. There is an exam fee of $7.50 per section. Be sure to bring proof of North Carolina Residency, a social security card, and appropriate photo ID.

Visit your local library or bookstore to view the available GED practice materials. Inquire at your local community college or adult learning center information about GED prep courses. Remember, it's never too late to earn a GED.
